Conditions I Work With

As a Naturopathic Medical practice, I am in a “general practice”, treating both chronic and acute diseases and imbalances in females, males and youth (3 + years old).

I recognize that you are a lot more than your symptoms. My goal is to get to the “root” of your problem, restore wellness and vitality, and prevent future disease.

Below is an overview of some of the key conditions that I treat.

Women’s Healthcare:

Empowering, Educating, Listening…Women’s Healthcare Re-imagined

I take a comprehensive and empowering approach with natural treatments for a wide range of women’s healthcare, including menstrual cycle re-balancing, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, pre-conception planning, and transitioning to menopause.

As a doctor, I take seriously my responsibility to educate you about your body, while I listen deeply to you as a person. Our menstrual cycles, in their infradian (monthly) rhythms, are a fifth vital sign and menopause is a natural process. We are here to support your individual journey and help you restore balance in the following areas:

  • Menstrual imbalances; PMS
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Vaginal infections
  • Bladder Infections
  • Interstitial Cystitis
  • Cervical Dysplasia
  • Smooth Transitions:
    • Going off the Oral Contraceptive Pill
    • Preconception Planning
    • Fertility Support
    • Peri-menopausal/menopausal years
  • Osteoporosis
  • Balance weight as relates to metabolic balance and vitality

In the future, I will be offering women’s gynecological examinations.

Children’s/Youth Healthcare (3+ years old):

Guiding your whole family to optimize wellness through “food as medicine”, botanicals, lifestyle, exercise, stress reduction and sleep hygiene.  Create a natural family “food and holistic medicine chest”.

The health of the child is inextricably linked to the health of the family: “food as medicine”, lifestyle, botanicals, exercise, stress reduction, and sleep hygiene. In our culture, mental, emotional, and physical health are inextricably linked. I see children and adolescents over 3 years old. The focus is on:

  • Food as medicine for the family; with an eye to budget, habits, skills, and meeting the family where they are at.
  • Botanical Medicine and Homeopathy. These are gentle but powerful forms of medicine which play a key role in wellness.
  • Helping families to develop a “holistic medicine chest” including foods, herbs, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and essential oils.
  • Treating acute issues such as coughs, colds, fevers, rashes, ear infections, diarrhea; as well as chronic issues such as asthma and eczema
  • Assessing root causes of mental health imbalances when they relate to diet, lifestyle, stress and/or sleep hygiene
  • Providing families with nutritional counseling
  • Assessing for food allergies
  • Supporting attention, focus and brain health
  • Helping to identify and remove environmental toxins

Note that as a licensed Naturopathic Physician in the state of CT, I do not prescribe pharmaceuticals or administer vaccinations. I am not licensed in this State to provide vaccination exemptions. However, if you are looking for a partner in your family’s wellness who will work with your pediatrician and be on your medical team, I am honored to do so.

Endocrine Imbalances:

Helping you to restore metabolic, thyroid and adrenal balance with comprehensive labs, functional testing and treatment plans.

Blood sugar and metabolic imbalances, thyroid imbalances and adrenal dysfunctions, exacerbated by stressors, are all highly prevalent. In order to create a personalized plan for you, I do a thorough work-up in order to understand how best to modify food, nutrition, and lifestyle to restore you to optimal endocrine system balance.

Conditions treated include:

  • Hypothyroid
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Autoimmunity)
  • Hyperthyroid
  • Type II diabetes
  • Metabolic imbalance
  • Low testosterone
  • Adrenal gland imbalances
  • Other hormonal imbalances

Brain and Mental Health:

Your mental health is linked to your physical health, nutrition (gut health), lifestyle, and sleep hygiene. In this age of anxiety, let Naturopathic Medicine with its rich “toolbox” and botanical medicine apothecary remove obstacles to feeling well mentally, emotionally and psychologically.

We are living in the age of anxiety and stress. Thankfully, there is a plethora of research about foundational changes you can make in your life in your food and lifestyle choices that will move you in the direction of increased mental balance. Botanical medicine (including herbs and flower essences) also has a wide “toolbox” to help in this area. Removing obstacles to your wellness is part of our mission. We will work together to develop an in-depth understanding of all the factors that are affecting your brain and mental health (including all your neurotransmitters; not just serotonin, for example).

Many of these imbalances do begin in the “gut”. We can be part of your team to help with symptoms of:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress reduction techniques
  • Insomnia
  • Memory Issues
  • Brain fog
  • Chronic Viral Symptoms that affect mental health

A complete evaluation of thyroid function, nutrient status, liver function, metabolic balance and, where needed, functional panels such as Organic Acids, Neurotransmitters, Amino Acids, Stool Testing, 3 X 4 genetics, Hair toxicology and mineral analysis are some of the many tools I have to help you to optimize your mental health.

Chronic Health Issues/Auto-immunity:

Heal, Re-Balance and Prevent with comprehensive lab and functional medicine testing and treatment plans to unwind disease processes and remove “obstacles to cure” in ubiquitous chronic health conditions.

Due to our Western ills of toxic “non-food”, stressful living, environmental toxins, chronic diseases, such as autoimmune imbalances that we did not see in 100 years ago, have overtaken healthcare. Let us help you to unwind from these disease processes and remove the obstacles to your body being as well as possible with the following pathologies:

  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Autoimmune Pathologies
  • Lyme Disease
  • Food sensitivities
  • Metabolic imbalances
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Bronchitis

Gastrointestinal Imbalances

The “root to good health”  is a healthy gut, rich in friendly bacteria, low in inflammation supported by whole foods nutrition.

So many of our imbalances begin in the gut. With today’s food supply which contains so much added inflammatory sugar, ingredients that we can’t say or don’t know what they are, refined grains and harmful pesticides, we all feel that we are fighting an uphill battle to keep our guts healthy.

Having owned an organic cafe for 16 years, I am “hands-on” in making impactful, specific, personalized “food as medicine” recommendations that will help you to wade through the plethora of confusing science by putting “you”, your budget and your habits in these recommendations.

I can help you to heal these imbalances:

  • Heartburn (GERD)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Ulcers
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Celiac Disease

Cardiovascular Health

Let’s dig deeper than cholesterol to keep your life-supporting cardio-vascular system supporting a long and vital healthspan.

Your cardiovascular and metabolic health relates to more than your cholesterol number. It is estimated that about 80% of Americans are metabolically imbalanced. Let’s work together to run some readily available labs through companies such as Quest diagnostics to do a more in-depth assessment of your risk factors, or more advanced labs if needed. This might include: fasting insulin, A1C hemoglobin, oxidized LDL, homocysteine, hs-CRP to name a few, in addition to standard lipid panels and liver function tests. Then, we can create a plan together that utilizes “food as medicine”, lifestyle, stress reduction, sleep hygiene, exercise  botanical medicine and targeted supplementation to help you to strengthen, repair and protect these life-supporting systems. In this way, we provide true prevention.

In my practice, I treat:

  • Hypertension
  • Metabolic Imbalance
  • Palpitations
  • Arrhythmias
  • Atherosclerosis

Personalized Skin Care

The health of our skin is often a reflection of our overall digestive health, the composition of the gut microbiome and our liver health (detox pathways). We work on the inside out to heal the skin.

This may include: “food as medicine” to support the gut and liver, skin healing botanical medicine, both internally and topically, stress reduction and homeopathy. These dermatological conditions are treated:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Shingle
  • Rashes

In New Hartford, Ct, we are lucky to have an aesthetic practice for skin care that uses only organic all natural products, including lymphatic massage. This is the type of topical interventions that work hand in hand with getting to the root of the skin imbalance internally.

Neurological

Headaches, from tension to migraines, the neurological  and long-term effects of Lyme dx and other viral illnesses, and recovery from concussions are all disorders that benefit from Naturopathic Medical care.

Although each of these has a complex etiology, my training in “Food as Medicine”, Lifestyle and Botanical Interventions  can aid in the path of wellness.

In addition, Dr. Lisa Laughlin, ND MS offers Cranial Sacral Therapies out of this office which rebalance the brain, cranial and lymphatic fluids aiding in healing.
