Supplements

The world of supplements is highly confusing. When I have found myself in the supplement aisle of Whole Foods or in a health food store, I see people perplexed and confused as they try to figure out reputable brands, ingredients and dosages. As a Naturopathic physician, I have access to doctor curated lines from reputable companies that have thought through scientific research, validity and evidence, combined with sourcing.

In general, many of the imbalances we experience start with lacking foundational nutrients:

  • We evolved eating a wild-harvested diversity of foods throughout the year that contained higher levels of all vitamins, minerals, and essential fats.
  • Because of depleted soils, industrial farming, and hybridization techniques, the animals and vegetables we eat have fewer nutrients
  • Much processed factory foods not only have fewer nutrients but are also a harmful “soup” of toxic pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals. Thus are body strains to manage and remove these toxins.
  • The total burden of environmental toxins,  clearing endogenous hormones, lack of sunlight, and chronic stress leads to higher nutrient needs.

And thus to keep ourselves well and out of frequent doctor’s visits, there is a lot we can do that is foundational.  In addition, when you have specific imbalances you want to know that the supplements you are taking are what they say they are, that the ingredients are at the right doses, that the ingredients are the best choices to get you well and that the companies are doing the right things in the way they run their businesses. In addition, quality for the price is a consideration. I am sharing with you my curated list of supplements that are Foundational  through Fullscript for anybody that accesses my website to purchase in order to help you be well.

Click the link below to my “doctor curated” dispensary in full script and you will find products in the following categories: Supporting Women’s Health, Menstrual Health, Prenatal/Fertility, Menopausal Support, Hormonal Imbalance, Adrenal and Thryoid support, Sleep Support, Mind and Body Health, Urinary Health, Gut Health, Detoxification/LIver Support, Reducing inflammation and pain, Immune Support, and Children’s Health.

Some safety rules for supplement use include:

  • Check with a licensed Naturopathic or Functional Medicine practitioner before starting supplements if you are one prescription medications. Not all herbs, supplements or medications go well together. They will help you to make the safest and most effective choice based on your personal medical history
  • More is not better: do not exceed the daily doses or length of time prescribed for supplements.
  • If you develop a new symptom such as a rash, nausea, headache, with no other changes to explain the symptom, stop your supplement immediately and consult with your provider.
  • During pregnancy, supplements are used to address specific nutrients. So, the use of supplements during pregnancy is limited and targeted in this way. Many supplements are safe during lactation but again consult with your Naturopathic Physician or Functional Medicine doctor to make the best choices for you at this transition time.
